That's the first line of the book. And I already knew I'm in for a good time, because it was all lip gloss' fault you see. Could this be love at first sight? *Gasp* |
Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper's destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.
Just when life can't get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she's charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper's least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him—and discovers that David's own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.

And the dramatics come in.
She's the one annoying person you will ever know who aims for perfection for every single thing she does. Her life is planned and polished out in perfection. She knows she's going to be a Business Leader of America and she knows she's going to be Homecoming Queen. 75% of her personality in this book hit me as plain irritation. I'm sorry if you love her but she's one annoying character.
But on the bright side, I feel the author is very creative to twists the traits of her own main character. Nowadays, all main characters are literally the same person: give no shit about fashion, sarcastic, badass, stubborn, a sit-back-and-just-relax-while-people-introduce-me-to-this-magical-world. It makes them almost predictable. I really have to give it to this author for finally giving us a change. Harper Jane Price, extremely girly, the jealous teenager, the perfectionist and very confident. (especially about her looks) It's a wonderful change and seriously I talk about how much I hate her but part of me love her to bits.

I wasn't even embarrassed that some random guy was watching me, Harper Jane Price, SGA President, head cheer-leader, Future Business Leader of America, and soon-to-be Homecoming Queen, puking my guts out in the boys' bathroom. |
"So, Harper Jane Price. Are you ready to accept your destiny?" |
I'm telling you, she's a character that's difficult not to love.
Here's an introduction to her love interest:

"There is a trick to walking gracefully on the arm of a man, and luckily, my nephew, David, has graciously volunteered to assist us." |
The romance is quite realistic in these book whereas the world was kinda cheesy - the Paladin and Oracle. I really think what weighed down this was purely because we don't really believe in this mostly because it doesn't seem like an extremely cool idea as compared to the hype these days like werewolves, vampires, warlocks etc. There are people out there who thinks warlocks are awesome but ask anyone to be a Paladin. Well. Nah.
However, I love the twist from the usual main character finding out she was not human, it was a lot more entertaining since it's one of the only books a hot guy doesn't pop out of nowhere and be her guide into the new world. (best part, Harper wasn't 'borned special' like most main characters)
If you're looking for a fresh new character and concept - though this concept won't make it big and I really don't see authors making money out of this in future - this is definitely the book for you. Rebel belle is very original I can assure you that.
By the way, the cover is freaking gorgeous.
