Slayers by C.J. Hill Genre: Fantasy, Action Before I say anything else, I would like to say this is the first book about dragons I have ever read. It was truly not what I expected at all. I wouldn't say this book was horrible but I wouldn't say it was fantastic either. Frankly, this was not what I expected because our main character Tori happened. |
Dragons exist. They’re ferocious. And they’re smart: Before they were killed off by slayer-knights, they rendered a select group of eggs dormant, so their offspring would survive. Only a handful of people know about this, let alone believe it – these “Slayers” are descended from the original knights, and are now a diverse group of teens that includes Tori, a smart but spoiled senator’s daughter who didn’t sign up to save the world.
The dragon eggs have fallen into the wrong hands. The Slayers must work together to stop the eggs from hatching. They will fight; they will fall in love. But will they survive?

Given the title, I would expect this book to be action-packed and plenty of kick ass training moments. All thanks to Crown of Midnight, I'm really in the bad ass mood. So this is really a it's-me-not-you situation because I sincerely raised my expectations to Crown of Midnight standards.
I think the biggest err in this book was Tori's character. A brat and slaying dragons simply cannot coexist. Either one has to thrive. This was pretty much my impression of her for a good 90% of the book:

Kody said, "We're only down by one anyhow. Tori's here. We still don't know what she can do." |
Because after this:
They'd found their missing dragon slayer. At a beauty salon. |
I can't take Tori seriously anymore.
There were so many selfish people in the book. And it is rather weird that they only return during the summer holidays or something to train. I don't know how such insufficient training is going to come in handy when they need it. And people like Danielle refused to go to the camp for just one month to train because she didn't want to leave her boyfriend. I really can't understand the teens in the story at all.
And further more, there is a love triangle. For me it's quite awkward for a love triangle to be in the middle of some slayers. The book has also constantly remind me how everything had taken place in a 4 days. Hence, I don't know if this could be said to be instalove or not. Adding up everything they went through, it's extremely difficult to imagine all these happening in mere 4 days, a week or two perhaps would have been a better range.
What I really love about this book is the humour because there's a brat so associated with that would be some rather laughable moments.

And as much as Lily is a bitch who cares about her well being compared to her teammates, she does make some snarky comments too.
Lily let out a cough of disbelief. "Yeah, that's it. One of the dragons would be feeling his way across the streets of D.C. with a cane clutched in its wing, terrorizing anyone who can't shuffle out of its way in time." |
I also found it amusing slayers fall out of their beds every morning. Seriously, even I don't do that which was why it was hilarious to me.
Jesse sat up before he opened his eyes. He stepped out of bed before he fully remembered where he was. He nearly bumped into Kody. Behind them, Dirk landed on the floor with a crash. Dirk swore , then stood up and brushed the dirt off the front of his pajamas. |
These dudes are not the only ones.
At 7:00 a.m. Tori jolted awake. She was out of bed, her blankets tangled around her feet, before she even opened her eyes. She stepped, tripped, and hit the ground with a slam that should have hurt worse than it did. |
Let's put it this way, the humour made the selfish characters more than bearable because if you can see these scenes, why not?
I felt that the suspense was lacking. Some matters could still be revealed in the next book or so to keep the mysterious effect there. It wasn't a suspense that made us think at all and that information could still be written in a way no one would know of the traitor yet. It was revealed way too early.
Overall, this book was quite enjoyable. However, if you are looking for an action-packed and heavy bad ass-ery, this book is definitely not for you. Slayers is a light-hearted action book and the pace of the book did not pick up until the near end.
