The winner's curse by Marie Rutkoski Genre: Fantasy, Action The book and I started off on a good note. I read the chapter sampler on Amazon, I got hooked so I just had to buy the book. I decided I shall read a few more pages before moving on with my tbr pile. And I decided to read a few more pages. And a few more. And a few more. |
Winning what you want may cost you everything you love...
As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions.
One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin.
But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.
Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

It was an extremely intriguing start. Perhaps it was the writing that made me fall in love but although nothing much was really happening at the start except for building a personality for these characters.
The characters make smart decisions and less than half the book in I was sure I would give this a 5, I knew the book was going to shatter my heart. Kestrel was smart, in fact too smart, she sees things I am unable to see and her choice of words are fantastic.
Arin did not act like a slave. He does things if under normal circumstances would get him a death sentence. He has no brain sometimes, doing little things that have no meaning at all, I'm surprised he didn't flunk his mission.

"Of course you have no gods. You have no souls." |
Dude. You're a slave. You don't just talk when you want to. Look up when you want to. Narrow your eyes when you want to. And even so, this is just a small matter. It's just two teen girls gossiping and he already can't hold his tongue. As someone who was on a supposedly mission, he ought to be more subtle.
The friendship between Arin and Cheat you could tell it would obviously not last because of Kestrel's existence and different opinions. It was quite obvious here that the character was made to sound okay but when things unfold, all their flaws are suddenly visible to everyone. By that I mean very suddenly.
What made me question my love for this book was the ending. It was just put out right there with flashing red lights and huge arrow pointing down at how annoyingly stupid the characters have become. Every single page poses a new cycle of the same questions. What is she doing? Is this a strategy? What is he doing? Isn't that goddamn stupid? Why. Why was everyone screwing their lives?
My heart shattered page by page and at the end was wow. Quite a number of things came unexpected and I feel that the romance weighed down on this one. It was kind of awkward and just wasn't right. But this book is just good stuff.
