Nothing can really describe my feels right now. Compared to Throne of Glass, this book took me to a whole new level.

"A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.
It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend."
From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.
Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.
Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena's world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie... and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

Whereas I liked Throne of Glass and felt it rather not living up to the hype, this installment blew me off. This book is so bad ass, I'm having extremely high hopes for this series, please please don't let me down. Fingers crossed.
I am so in love with the book it's hard to begin so let me start with the little problem I have with it.
#1 World Building: Given that this is a fantasy world and whatever I know about this world probably cannot fill up three lines. It is really bad. Sometimes I feel that the author puts her emphasis on kick ass moments and building the characters that she cast the world building all the way to the end and hence the information becomes a shit load and crammed. And well my brain have problems processing all that. It's so complicated seriously. There's fae, evil plans, complicated history, all kinds of mythical creatures, different nations. I really hope I get to fully know whatever is going on in the book as the series progresses.
Basically if I give a book five stars, I pretty much love every aspect of the book.
#1 Chaolaena: This is the best book couple ever. And yes people I ship them really bad. After I finished recording the pages I saved quotes of and I collated them, I realised 98% of them were Chaolaena cuteness. Objecting to scandalous outfits, getting worried for Celaena and pacing about. This guy is cutely overprotective, I want a piece of Chaol for myself.

They reached the main entrance in silence and Celaena slipped on her kid gloves as they neared the towering double doors that opened onto the courtyard. She was just about to walk down the front steps when Chaol touched her shoulder. |
And reading in his point of view, he gets even sweeter and I lose all my logic. They share so many awesome and sweet moments, I literally cannot stop smiling.
She kicked Chaol in the rib with a sock-covered foot. "All I'm saying is that I'd like some choclate cake ever now and then." |
Every moment they are together is so adorable, except for wellthat part everyone want to hit Chaol for. Chaolaena plus minor side characters is pretty much awesome sauce with more awesome in it.
As Celaena's chuckles faded, Chaol looked at her, his brows high. "You're one to laugh. You moan about the cold floors more than anyone I know." |
I just love them together so much! I really don't care what happens, I need to see them together in the end.
I really think the love triangle is to blame for many things. I have a rule: if any author creates a love triangle, it had better end well. Meaning, the author should never resort to deliberately killing off one guy to make the triangle work out. I don't care if it's Dorian or Chaol, just no killing off any. Throne of Glass started with Dorian and ended there. In Crown of Midnight it was the beginning of Chaolaena and once again it did not end well. If the series continues switching between both guys throughout, I might just end up throwing everything out of the window. I say it's better for an assassin to be decisive.
#2 Bad ass: I know this has been repeated way too many times. But really it is goddamn bad ass.

She tipped her head back and gave the moon a wicked smile. SHe'd been called Adarlan's Assassin for a reason. Dramatic entrances were practically her art form. |
The action in this book is gold. That's when her enemies know their place when Celaena goes into full kick ass mode, and their smug look on their faces - when they thought their opponent was merely a girl - get wiped off their face.
As much as I love her going into this mode, I don't want it either. Because every time this happens, it seemed like humanity was ripped out of her soul and I truly was afraid she would never once again be the Celaena I loved. But it showed killing was really something done without a shred of mercy or a shred or humanity, this will never be the work of a someone with a soft-heart.
#3 New aspects: It is unveiled slowly through every book, the world and how things could be fixed. In Throne of Glass what we thought would change, this is not simply a tyrant that can be defeated by a good army. We face questions, how did the king take out the initial strongest empire - Terrasen? Could it be just the military's work or is it something more? We discover more in Crown of Midnight. Some of which drastically changes the direction of the book.
This book had the right amount of action and romance laced with humour constantly, with a tad bit of mystery and magic. I loved how every part of the story made me feel: tense, worried, disgusted, horrified, happy, excited and even miserable. And well this book made me 100% sure of Chaolaena, I would object to any other. These two are truly the perfect ship. I wouldn't lie but I would be extremely disappointed if she chose Dorian.
