Illusions of Fate by Kiersten White Genre: Historical-Fiction, Supernatural, Fantasy Illusions of Fate has a beautiful cover. Let me tell you that the contents are equally swoon-worthy.
Guys, I'm still not done swooning yet. |
“I did my best to keep you from crossing paths with this world. And I shall do my best to protect you now that you have.”
Jessamin has been an outcast since she moved from her island home of Melei to the dreary country of Albion. Everything changes when she meets Finn, a gorgeous, enigmatic young lord who introduces her to the secret world of Albion’s nobility, a world that has everything Jessamin doesn’t—power, money, status…and magic. But Finn has secrets of his own, dangerous secrets that the vicious Lord Downpike will do anything to possess. Unless Jessamin, armed only with her wits and her determination, can stop him.

As much as I want it to be, this book isn't a solid 5 stars due to the last few rushed chapters. But to all the plot holes, my mind literally went like:
Illusions of Fate was a fast-paced and mystical fantasy book laced with more swoon-worthy romance. I finished this in one sitting and totally couldn't put it down at all. In those few hours. This book was life.
“He follows my eyes and curses, then slides his hands beneath my legs and back. "What are you doing?" |
My heart practically melted into a puddle of goo because Finn. Until I read this book, I had no idea I had a thing for cute blonde guys with canes. Like, I am in love with his cane. No joke. I have never had such fondness for an inanimate object in my entire life.
"If you ever try that again," I say, taking a sip of chocolate to wet my suddenly parched throat, "I will beat you silly with your own cane." |
The romance was paced well other than the fact I can't wait for them to start making out. Finn was just charming, it's hard to fathom why Jessamin hadn't jumped on him first second available.
Jessamin was also quite the strong protagonist. As much as I love the romance, I'm pleased that she didn't get too obsessed at first and thankfully things didn't go 0 to 100.

“I clench my jaw and narrow my eyes. I am no wilting Alben, I am a fierce and strong Melenese woman. And I am not the victim of any cruel jokes. Spirits below, I will make certain he knows I am not to be toyed with.” |
She refused Finn's protection and wants her independence even if she is going through a tough patch. In a sense, her stubbornness can make her rather infuriating at times and she's making me jumpy because every second, I feel someone is going to jump out of the shadows at her. Jessamin does realise she was attracted to Finn at first (cause' gee this dude is hot), but at the start she slaps herself for it although later on she slowly learns about Finn and eventually falls for him. It's an extremely well-written romance, I would say.
I also liked how Eleanor played a part in the plot as an awesome female friend. They don't leave one another behind in difficult times and mostly I love just how smart and sly she is.

(Jessamin)“They’re wrong, you know. About you. Your uncle and Lord Downpike. You are smart and brave and terribly important.” |
All in all, I would have loved it if the author spent more time building this world and create a more realistic twist at the end. This book was just 270 pages, surely it can't hurt to write a bit more. I think none of us readers would actually mind. P.S. We need more Finn and Jessamin.
“You are not excused, you will never be excused, and you will spend the rest of your life making it up to me.” |
