The Fill-in Boyfriend by Kasie West Genre: Contemporary-romance Here's the thing. After I finished this book, I immediately went to Kasie's works and added every single one of her to-be-published books into my shelf - even the ones with no blurb. And if there was an untitled one, I would have added that too. Just screw it. I love Kasie West's books. |
When Gia Montgomery's boyfriend, Bradley, dumps her in the parking lot of her high school prom, she has to think fast. After all, she'd been telling her friends about him for months now. This was supposed to be the night she proved he existed. So when she sees a cute guy waiting to pick up his sister, she enlists his help. The task is simple: be her fill-in boyfriend—two hours, zero commitment, a few white lies. After that, she can win back the real Bradley.
The problem is that days after prom, it's not the real Bradley she's thinking about, but the stand-in. The one whose name she doesn't even know. But tracking him down doesn't mean they're done faking a relationship. Gia owes him a favor and his sister intends to see that he collects: his ex-girlfriend's graduation party—three hours, zero commitment, a few white lies.
Just when Gia begins to wonder if she could turn her fake boyfriend into a real one, Bradley comes waltzing back into her life, exposing her lie, and threatening to destroy her friendships and her new-found relationship.

I'm not good at compliments, just bear with me. Imagine you haven't eaten ice cream in 10 years. Suddenly, there in front of you sat your favourite ice cream. The yummiest. The perfect. The sweetest (if you love sweet stuff that is) ice cream ever. Yeah, that was how the book felt like. Excuse the terrible analogy, just accept that the book was fantastic. My favourite contemporary book of hers before this was The distance between us but now this is like on par.
So I'm just gonna hard sell I mean hype this book up for everyone who hasn't read it. By that I mean I will try my best to do it as crazily as possible.
Gia Montgomery is the world-class stuck-up brat. Yup, you heard it. Being a mere senior in high school, I guess no one really believed she was dating this Bradley who was a junior in college. Since nobody seen this so-called boyfriend before, oh look the calendar says a prom is coming up. Perfect opportunity to prove to her skeptical friends this dude exists!
The good news is Bradley did show up. The bad news is Gia's first sentence at seeing her long-time-no-see boyfriend was

"My friends are going to die." |
Bradley felt damn welcomed. This sums up the story of how Gia got dumped on prom night: self obsession basically.
That's when I caught the eye of a driver's seat of the car across me. |
Gasp. Rings alarm. Potential fake date alert. Their first meeting went something like this
"You get to be my date." |
No shame there. Then it went to a little more desperate side.
"I can pay you." |
That's really how everything went down from here. But I swear Gia and fill-in Bradley are the cutest things ever - like I can't even say his name because cue the spoilers. And Bec (Fill-in Bradley's sister) was like what, a matchmaker, I would say.
I got ready to throw again and he said, "Okay, come here. You need direction." He pulled me closer then positioned himself behind me. |
Ahh didn't have to make it that obvious. For me this book was literally perfection, but I can see where the criticism is coming from. Gia is a stuck-up snob, and obviously, her being the narrator spoils it a little at the beginning. I wouldn't say there was major development but she changed her ways and at least try. Her efforts are quite evident especially at the end of the book, even though the friendship ends were not tied up well, it's quite a wonderful ending.
At this point I'm just going to insert another cute quote.
"Well, if you're a mess I'm a natural disaster.:
"The cutest natural disaster I've ever seen."
I swear there's more from where that came from. Wish I could quote more mystery dude + Gia alas it's for you to read. I probably put this in every of her review but I will say it again. Kasie West does no wrong. Now I shall sit in a corner and pout until her next book comes out.
